It's officially one month until winter but somebody forgot to tell Queensland.

The Sunshine State is living up to its name having just sweltered through its hottest April, with temperature records smashed and many parts receiving well below average rainfall.

As southerners pull out their winter woollies, Queenslanders are keeping their togs handy in a seemingly endless summer with temperatures tipped to remain hotter than normal in May.

April brought perfect swimming weather for Queensland, with daily average maximums of 32.8C, 2.9C warmer than normal and 0.4C higher than the previous record set in 2005.

There wasn't much relief from the heat at night, with the state recording an average minimum temperature of 19.8C, 2.5C above the norm and three degrees hotter than the average maximum in Tasmania.

Queensland's daily mean temperature was 26.3C, which was 2.7C above normal and eclipsed the previous April record, set in 2005, by half a degree.

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Rob Smalley said strong northwesterly winds and a lack of southeasterly winds had caused the April heat.

He said conditions had also been 78 per cent drier than normal.

"Most of Queensland has received well below average rainfall," he told AAP.

Brisbane Airport recorded its lowest ever April rainfall in the station's 21-year history, with just 11.8mm falling last month - a seventh of the average.

It was also the warmest month on record in Brisbane, an average maximum temperature of 27.3C.

The warm weather is still hanging around, with daily maximum temperatures from 27C to 30C forecast for the rest of the week.

Mr Smalley said temperatures across Queensland would also be hotter than normal in May, with more records expected to be broken.
