Annastacia Palaszczuk has accused Queensland's former government of turning its back on proper judicial appointment processes.

The premier said if the story behind former premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen's appointment of Walter Campbell as chief justice in 1982 was common knowledge when the Liberal National Party government was looking for a new top judge in 2013, it would have stuck to protocol.

"If that story was in the public realm two years ago, history may have ensured politicians would never again dare turn their backs on proper judicial appointment processes," Ms Palaszczuk told a book launch in Brisbane on Wednesday night.

Judge Tim Carmody resigned as chief justice in June, after just over one year in the position, following sustained public opposition to his appointment from fellow judges and the judicial community.
