A Queensland teenager has been remanded in custody after he was charged over a dramatic Gold Coast police chase during which shots were fired.

Gold Coast man Joel Gillard, 19, was in a car that allegedly sped away from officers in Surfers Paradise about 9pm on Sunday evening.

During the subsequent pursuit, the 4WD vehicle allegedly rammed police cars and drove at officers, prompting them to fire shots at the car.

Police are still searching for the alleged driver of the stolen car, 28-year-old Sarah Jane Boyd, and released her photograph on Monday afternoon.

Gillard was charged with armed robbery, attempted armed robbery with violence, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He allegedly threatened a taxi driver with a tomahawk before the police chase and attempted to rob a Pacific Pines service station, according to reports.

Gillard was remanded in custody after appearing in the Southport Magistrates Court.

Two officers involved in the chase were treated for minor injuries in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

A 39-year-old woman whose car was damaged in the chaos also suffered minor injuries.

An ethical standards command investigation will examine all aspects of the pursuit and discharge of firearms, police said.
