Qld man had coke posted from US: court

A Gold Coast man had high-grade cocaine posted to him from the United States almost a dozen times before authorities cottoned on.

Jason Brookes Taylor, 27, received 11 parcels from California containing the drug over 12 months in 2009 and 2010, the Brisbane District Court heard.

The packages were couriered by FedEx to various addresses and labelled as business documents.

But each held about half to one ounce (14-28g) of the white powder, Crown prosecutor Heather Cunningham said.

"In each case the defendant took steps to avoid detection," she said.

"He had the packages addressed to a false name with a false sender, name and address."

The mail-order drug scam was busted however, when Customs officials intercepted a 12th package in June 2010.

Inside they found 29.3g of cocaine, which testing revealed was 63 per cent pure.

Taylor pleaded guilty to 12 counts of importing controlled drugs on Wednesday.

Ms Cunningham said he hadn't on-sold the cocaine but had consumed it himself or given it away to friends and associates.

"He gave some of the cocaine to them at parties and nightclubs because he enjoyed the attention that it brought him," she told the court.

All up, Taylor transferred just under US$50,000 to his associate in the US, paying about $3000 per ounce for the cocaine.

The parcels were sent to various addresses, including Taylor's own house, an adjoining unit, a colleague's house, and a shop where he had an agreement with the owner.

He was placed on a $1000, two-year good behaviour bond by Judge Deborah Richards, who recorded the conviction.
