Queensland man charged over horse drowning

A Queensland man has been charged after allegedly drowning a four-month-old thoroughbred foal.

The 56-year-old from Yandina was charged with serious animal cruelty following a joint investigation involving police and Queensland Racing.

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) Commissioner Ross Barnett said the industry was determined to work with police to hold participants to account.

"The welfare of racing animals is of the utmost importance and those who perform acts of cruelty to animals are on notice," he said.

The man is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 22 accused of serious animal cruelty, breach of duty of care and wilful damage.

The maximum penalty for serious animal cruelty is seven years' imprisonment.
