Queensland Speaker Peter Wellington has moved to silence parliamentary debate around an Ethics Committee investigation into embattled Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller.

The Sunshine Coast independent referred five Liberal National Party MPs to the parliamentary Ethics Committee on Tuesday afternoon following a heated exchange about the issue earlier in the day.

The opposition has hounded the government in question time during this year's sitting weeks about the inquiry into whether Ms Miller failed to destroy confidential documents and then signed a false statement saying she had.

Ms Miller was referred to the Ethics Committee by Labor government MPs on the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee.

Mr Wellington finally threw the book at Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, his deputy John-Paul Langbroek and Liberal National Party frontbenchers Scott Emerson, Tim Nicholls and Jarrod Bleijie for asking about the investigation.

"Those members can explain their knowledge and failure to abide by standing orders to the Ethics Committee," the Speaker told the House.

"Lastly, it is clear that some of the questions this morning were clearly out of order as they contained imputations.

"Members, the unauthorised release of Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee information must cease.

"The deliberate breach of standing order 271, which prohibits matters before the Ethics Committee being debated in the house, must also cease."

The Ethics Committee is yet to table its findings on the investigation into Ms Miller's case.

The police minister has been embroiled in controversy since her appointment.

She has been accused of plotting a coup against Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and apologised earlier this year for an "error of judgment" in ringing a man who made allegations of forgery and harassment against first-term Labor MP Rick Williams.

If Ms Miller is found to have misled the parliament, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk should reconsider the minister's position, according to the ministerial code of conduct.

Ms Palaszczuk has refused to stand aside Ms Miller during the Ethics Committee investigation.
