Qld king-hit accused had done it before

A carpenter accused of king-hitting another man during a late-night fight in Brisbane was on probation for a similar offence last month, a court has heard.

Richard Scott Atutolu, 23, was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly knocking a man unconscious in the clubbing district of Fortitude Valley early on Saturday morning.

The man is in an induced coma in hospital with a fractured skull and a brain bleed, police prosecutor Sergeant Scott Pearson told the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

"The real concern with this defendant is further offending and the flight risk," he said.

"There's a victim to this undergoing serious treatment."

Atutolu was convicted of assault occasioning bodily harm in August, the court heard.

"What will be different this time, Mr Atutolu?" Magistrate Ann Thacker asked.

Atutolu's lawyer Debbie Kilroy acknowledged it was a major concern but said he had the support of his family.

"They're quite shocked obviously - and concerned for their son," she said.

Atutolu was granted bail on the conditions that he not enter the Fortitude Valley clubbing precinct, not drink alcohol or take drugs, adhere to a curfew, and surrender his passport.
