Qld treasurer happy with jobs growth

With little movement in Queensland's jobless rate, both sides of politics have offered their own spin on what the latest numbers mean.

Official figures on Thursday from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has risen slightly in April to 6.7 per cent, up from 6.6 per cent in March.

The state's trend unemployment rate remained steady at 6.6 per cent.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt says 5300 full-time jobs were created in Queensland in April.

"Queensland's trend toward full-time employment growth is another encouraging sign which shows that Labor is getting the state's economy back on track," Mr Pitt said.

"Job creation will always be this government's number one priority and there's no doubt we're heading in the right direction."

State shadow Treasurer John Paul-Langbroek agreed it was great to see an overall increase in employment, but that's where the bipartisanship stopped.

Relying on the seasonally-adjusted figures, Mr Langbroek said unemployment had only increased under the new government's watch.

"We know business confidence is at its lowest level in six years and business conditions are the worst in a decade," Mr Langbroek said.

Queensland has the third-worst jobless rate in the country, in seasonally adjusted terms, behind Tasmania (7.3 per cent) and South Australia (7.1 per cent).
