Cannabis trial for troubled Qld hospital

Queensland's troubled Lady Cilento Children's Hospital will host a multimillion-dollar trial of medicinal cannabis.

Health Minister Cameron Dick says the $3 million trial will target children with severe drug-resistant epilepsy and begin next year at the Brisbane facility.

It will be held in conjunction with a NSW trial.

The announcement comes after the government earlier this week unveiled a $70 million plan to address the series of problems, including a bed and staffing shortage, that have plagued the hospital since it opened last November.

Mr Dick didn't mention the hospital's problems when announcing the cannabis trial on Thursday.

"As a tertiary paediatric facility treating the sickest children from all over Queensland, the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital is the most best-placed facility in Queensland to co-ordinate the trial," the minister told parliament.

Mr Dick said his government would partner with the NSW government to access cannabis products provided by GW Pharmaceuticals.

He said the state would also legalise the use of Sativex, a form of medicinal marijuana, for adults with multiple sclerosis.

"We are taking the next step in our commitment to give Queenslanders with multiple sclerosis and children with epilepsy fresh hope for a better life and access to up-to-date treatment options," Mr Dick said.
