Qld gov wants to introduce new DV charge

Queenslanders convicted of attempting to strangle, choke or suffocate someone will face up to seven years in jail under planned new laws.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a proposal to introduce a new separate non-fatal strangulation offence, in a bid to combat domestic violence.

"This new offence is about holding perpetrators to account for their actions," she said.

"We know strangulation is a pivotal moment that reveals an escalation in the seriousness of the violence committed against a person in the context of domestic and family violence."

The proposal will be introduced to parliament next week and could come into force as early as February.

Creating a separate offence for strangulation was one of 121 recommendations outlined in a special task force on domestic violence report titled Not Now, Not Ever.

The new offence will carry a maximum penalty of seven years' jail, which is much higher than what can be handed out for assault.
