Qld drivers scared at wrong-way car on M1

Motorists have been forced to take evasive action after an elderly woman allegedly drove the wrong way on a major Gold Coast motorway.

The woman was driving a silver Volvo when she was spotted driving south in the north-bound lanes of the M1, on the northern end of the Gold Coast near Oxenford, at approximately 2pm on Friday.

Police quickly intercepted the car and the driver pulled over on the shoulder of the road, somehow avoiding an accident.

At least one dashboard camera image shows the woman's car heading towards oncoming traffic on the four-lane northbound side of the motorway.

A motorist told news website mygc.com.au that he had to swerve to avoid the rogue car, suggesting it had performed a U-turn whilst travelling on the motorway.

"It scared the crap out of us when she started to turn around from the far left lane, crossing across the three other lanes," the unnamed driver is reported to have said.

"(She) nearly took out two cars and a truck."

Police investigations are ongoing.
