Qld driver almost cleaned up by coal train

Shocking footage has emerged of a central Queensland driver ploughing through the boom gates at a level crossing just seconds before a 12,000 tonne coal train rumbles along.

Aurizon's Head of Safety Neil Backer said train drivers were horrified by the near miss.

"Our drivers can't swerve to miss you, they can only apply the emergency brakes and hope to stop in time," he said.

Travelling at 80km/h, the two kilometre long coal trains can take up to two kilometres to stop.

This week is National Rail Safety Week, and Mr Backer has urged motorists not to play "Russian roulette with our drivers - they deserve to go to work and and come home safely each day".
