Qld cop who killed his son to be sentenced

A Queensland police officer has admitted killing his baby with a punch so hard it pulped the boy's liver.

Senior Constable Colin David Randall attacked his 10-week-old son Kye with a single blow in June 2014, during the first time they had been left alone.

For three-and-a-half years after killing his son he lied to his wife, medical staff and investigators, but his ruse came undone when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Brisbane Supreme Court last Friday.

The plea came one week before he was due to face trial charged with murder.

During sentencing submissions on Tuesday, crown prosecutor Phil McCarthy said Randall should be given a similar sentence to Heidi Strbak, who was jailed in December.

Strbak was sentenced to a maximum nine year's jail, eligible for parole after four years served, for killing her four-year-old son.

Randall remains in custody while Justice Peter Davis prepares the sentence, which is due to be delivered in the coming weeks.
