No remains but Phillips info 'credible'

Detectives searching a site southwest of Brisbane for the remains of Sharron Phillips are yet to find anything but say the information that led them to dig there is "very credible".

The 20-year-old vanished from Wacol on the night of May 8, 1986, after her car ran out of petrol, sparking one of Queensland's most baffling cold cases.

Investigators are looking at the possibility she was picked up by a taxi driver, who is connected to the witness who provided the tip-off which triggered the excavation of a parcel of council-owned land at Carole Park last week.

Acting Detective Superintendent Damien Hansen said two drains at the site had been cleared and no skeletal remains had been found.

Police will now hand-sieve the removed soil in the search for smaller bone fragments, a painstaking process which could take months.

Although investigators are yet to unearth any sign of Ms Phillips, Det Supt Hansen said they remained confident about the information provided by the witness.

"The information that we were given by this person, I still think is very credible and we will be progressing with that," he said on Wednesday.

"The witness is adamant the information provided to us is accurate."

The witness had provided information that matched with details earlier in the investigation that had never been made public, he said.

The site being dug up is not far from where Ms Phillips was last seen waiting for her boyfriend after using a public phone.

Det Supt Hansen confirmed police were looking at whether Ms Phillips may have been picked up by a taxi driver that night.

He said the taxi driver was connected to the witness but would not say whether they were related.

Investigators have also received more than 30 new leads through Crime Stoppers after recent media coverage of Ms Phillip's suspected murder.

The case took an unexpected twist last month when some of the Phillips' siblings questioned the alibi of their father Bob, who died last year.

Det Supt Hansen said the Phillips family remained supportive.
