Qld can be important Indian partner: Modi

Queensland can be an important source of energy and food for India, the country's prime minister says.

Narendra Modi has been in Brisbane for the G20 summit, the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Australia in 28 years.

Mr Modi sees Queensland as an important partner for his government and said India is particularly interested in the state's vast coal and natural gas reserves, farmland, and its technology and tourism sectors.

"Queensland can be an important partner for India's government in energy, mineral resources, agriculture and food security," he told a private breakfast in Brisbane.

"India would be willing to partner with you."

He praised the Newman government's trade missions to different India cities and congratulated Queensland and Brisbane for hosting "a wonderful G20".

"For the past few weeks you have shown to the whole world what a world-class city you are," he added.

Mr Modi was addressing thousands of supporters in Sydney on Monday night and is due to travel to Canberra on Tuesday to address federal parliament.
