Police union chief praises siege officers

The Queensland Police Union has praised all police involved in a siege west of Brisbane, sparked by the shooting death of an officer.

Senior Constable Brett Forte was killed and other officers were injured after Rick Maddison evaded a traffic stop in the Lockyer Valley just before 2pm on Monday.

Maddison was shot and killed by officers after a 21-hour stand-off on a rural property at Seventeen Mile in the Lockyer Valley.

Local residents heard four shots ring out after the 40-year-old "wanted man" attempted to flee from the property and shot at Special Emergency Response Team officers.

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers on Tuesday commended the actions of all police involved in trying to apprehend Maddison.

"The events of the last two days will be enormously scrutinised over the next few years and obviously more information will come out in terms of the bravery of all police involved," Mr Leavers said in a statement.

"Even though the threat has been neutralised, nothing will bring Brett back.

"My focus is now on the wellbeing of his family, colleagues and co-workers as we face the now difficult immediate future together as we come to terms with what has happened and we grieve over the events of yesterday."

Before the shootout, Mr Leavers admitted it was a dark day for police officers around the country.

"The 60,000 police in Australia, are hurting today," he said.
