Party-hopper Douglas expects Gaven win

Gold Coast independent Alex Douglas has knocked back a claim his party-hopping ways will cost him the seat of Gaven at this month's Queensland election.

Dr Douglas was the Liberal National Party (LNP) candidate for the seat at the 2012 election, winning with a margin of 19.1 per cent.

Shortly after the election, however, Dr Douglas quit the LNP and became an independent.

He then joined the Palmer United Party (PUP) in 2013 and was appointed the party's state leader.

But Dr Douglas quit the PUP in late 2014 and will stand at this month's election as an independent.

A report in the Gold Coast Bulletin suggested Dr Douglas's lack of party loyalty was likely to cost him at the January 31 poll, a claim he strongly refutes.

"They've got no evidence ... where in the story does it say that people were interviewed to say that people thought I'd been party-swapping and that would influence their vote?" Dr Douglas told AAP.

"There was no evidence of that whatsoever. The whole story is false."

The article cites a betting market by bookmaker Sportsbet which places Dr Douglas at $5.50 to retain the seat, behind LNP candidate Sid Cramp ($1.85) and Labor's Michael Riordan ($2.80).

Dr Douglas says that market is false, as he'd tried to place money on himself on Tuesday but was unable to.

"They need to `fess up and say why aren't they taking bets on Dr Douglas?," he said.

"I've won that seat as a National. I've won that seat as a coalition candidate ... but I'm happy to be the underdog. That's the only part of that story that's true."
