Parts of central Queensland down to the state's southeast and NSW are set to experience a weekend of heavy rain and thunderstorms that could result in flooding.

A low-pressure trough is set to move over Queensland's central and southeast regions from today until the end of the weekend, which is expected to cause widespread rain and thunderstorms over the next four days.

Weather data firm Weatherzone says that while Thursday's rain is not expected to bring flooding, the conditions will dampen the ground and prime the landscape for flooding over the weekend.

Severe storms may also cause flash flooding in isolated areas across parts of Queensland.

The wet weather over the state's central and south-east regions is expected to worsen on Friday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms developing overnight into tomorrow.

The state's central and southern regions will brace for further rain and thunderstorms over the weekend, with an increased likelihood of flooding.

The wild conditions are set to extend to NSW, with 100 to 200 millimetres of rain expected between Thursday and Sunday in Queensland's south-east and central regions that could extend to NSW's north.

The expected downpour is set to bring flood warnings to NSW's far northeast.

Rain and thunderstorms are also expected to carry over Australia's northern, central and eastern areas for the rest of the week.
