Thousands rally for Labour Day in Qld

Thousands rallied in Brisbane for the annual Labour Day march in support of workers' rights.

The mood of the rally, which coincided with May Day events in other capitals, was triumphant as unionists celebrated the Labor Party's return to government after January's shock election victory.

Loud cheers and applause came from Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds when Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk took to the stage to congratulate the party faithful.

"In just three short years the arrogance is gone, the out of touch government is gone, Campbell Newman gone," she said.

"The government I lead is a government for all Queenslanders."

In a brief speech emphasising her party's commitment to workers' rights and job creation, the premier pledged to govern "for all Queenslanders".

"The people of Queensland have given us a huge task, and we will never abandon their trust," she said.

The government has pledged to return the Labour Day public holiday to May, after the former Newman government moved it to October.

The promise was reiterated by Ms Palaszczuk on Sunday, drawing the loudest applause from the crowd.

Queensland Council of Unions president John Battams said the event sent a message to Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

"We can kick out the Newman government in a term and we can kick you out too," he said.
