Overseas visitors flock to the Gold Coast

Its own mayor may think it tacky enough to host the Logies, but the Gold Coast continues to be one of Australia's most popular international tourist destinations.

More than one million holiday makers visited the Glitter Strip in the 12 months to June 2017, a record increase of 7.2 per cent.

The International Visitor Surveys data, released on Wednesday, also found 2.6 million tourists visited Queensland from overseas.

It was an increase of 5.6 per cent on the previous year, while Australia's overall international tourist numbers also jumped by 8.7 per cent to a record 7.8 million.

China provided the most visitors to the Gold Coast, with 303,000 making the overseas trip.

They were followed by residents from New Zealand, the UK, Japan and the US.

American tourist numbers reached 41,000, an increase of 22.3 per cent.

Gold Coast Tourism chairman Paul Donovan said confidence in the southeast Queensland destination was continuing to grow ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games.

"These are great figures ahead of our peak summer holiday period," he said in a statement.
