A Cairns environmentalist who camped in a mango tree in an unsuccessful bid to save it from being cut down won't be punished for obstructing police.

Geoff Holland and supporters were tricked into letting a police officer posing as a conservationist into the tree after a week of protesting last year.

Magistrate Jane Bentley on Friday found the man guilty of obstructing police as they tried to remove protesters after the sting.

But she ordered a conviction not be recorded and Mr Holland receive no other punishment.

Outside court, Holland did not rule out further similar protests in the future and said he felt no guilt for his actions.

He said the community had not been properly consulted about the tree, which was one of four removed from Munro Martin Park.
