Murder acquitted man jailed for assault

A Gold Coast man, acquitted of the 2012 murder of a nightclub promoter, has been jailed for an assault committed just six weeks after his acquittal.

Christopher Cairns pleaded guilty to a single count each of going armed to cause fear and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Cairns punched a 28-year-old man in a Helensvale tavern in March.

He then drew a Stanley knife on security when they approached him.

Cairns, who was already in custody, has been sentenced to 12 months jail and will be eligible for parole on February 18.

The assault occurred just six weeks after Cairns and co-accused Dion Pydde were acquitted following a Supreme Court trial for the murder of Tumara Cousins.

The pair had been accused of murdering Mr Cousins, who fell 31 storeys to his death from a Surfers Paradise resort after a drug deal gone wrong in May 2012.
