Motorbike champ Doohan accused of assault

Five-time world motorcycle champion Mick Doohan has rejected allegations he assaulted another man after a meeting of Karting Australia on the Gold Coast.

Local man Peter Edgar has lodged a complaint with police that Doohan tried to take a phone from his hands as he was filming board members leave the meeting for his Facebook page.

Mr Edgar, who says he suffers from a degenerative disease, told the Courier Mail Doohan verbally abused him before taking the phone from his hand.

"My fingers are permanently bent at 90 degrees so as the phone came out, the force of him hanging onto the phone straightened out my fingers, tore the tendons and snapped my fingers back."

Doohan has denied the allegation.

"I don't know of any assault - you might want to take a look at this guy's Facebook page and that will tell you a little bit about this fella," Doohan told the Courier Mail.

A spokesman for Southport police said they were investigating an alleged incident at the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club on May 30, but said the allegations were at the very low end of the assault range.

It's understood police will seek the club's CCTV footage and interview Doohan as part of their inquiries.
