Brisbane storm bill passes $300m

The damage bill from a savage hailstorm that tore through Brisbane has passed $300 million.

Insurance companies have been dealing with a constant flow of claims and inquiries since the supercell storm left a trail of destruction across southeast Queensland last Thursday.

About 60,000 claims had been lodged by property and motor vehicle owners as of Tuesday morning, the Insurance Council of Australia said.

But insurers were not expecting the enormous recovery effort to lead to a shortage in trades or supplies, chief executive Rob Whelan said.

"With this number of claims we ask residents and motor vehicle owners to be patient as insurers work through the claims process," he said.

The storm packed gusts of up to 140km/h and dumped torrential rain.

Hailstones the size of golf and tennis balls shattered windows and damaged cars in dozens of suburbs, including Annerley, Moorooka, Kangaroo Point, West End and Brisbane City.

As the recovery continues, Brisbane is bracing itself for more storm activity.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects storms to be most likely in the southeast between Friday and Monday, but they are not expected to be as destructive as the supercell system.
