More Qld electorates may be needed: oppn

Queensland's opposition wants an independent body to consider creating more seats in state parliament.

Shadow Attorney-General Ian Walker says the last redistribution of seats occurred 30 years ago and the average number of voters in each electorate has doubled.

"It may be wise to look at whether more seats need to be created," he said in a statement.

The LNP is proposing the Redistribution Commission consider expanding the number of seats in parliament from 89 to 94.

It would also allow the option for the weighting currently provided for large seats to be increased from two to four per cent.

The LNP will introduce a bill into parliament this week outlining their proposal, which would also give the commission more flexibility to determine what is required to properly service regional and remote parts of the state.

Mr Walker said the proposal follows recommendations from the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was disappointing the opposition was talking about creating jobs for politicians the day after the government had announced in the budget its plan for jobs for Queenslanders.

"I honestly believe that (Opposition Leader) Lawrence Springborg has twisted priorities," she said.

"I think the last thing that Queenslanders want is more politicians."
