Authorities have cracked down on an alleged NDIS fraud in Queensland, seizing millions in cash, gold, and silver in the process.

A months-long investigation looking into an alleged illegitimate NDIS provider led to several searches being conducted across Brisbane, Cairns, and Far North Queensland last month.

The investigation began after the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) claimed a participant was submitting claims for support and services that were not provided.

The searches across five businesses and homes found $94,000 in cash, alleged to be the proceeds of crime, and gold and silver coins that had a value of around $82,000.

Large wads of cash were seen being sorted by investigators, with many large buckets allegedly containing the gold and silver also found during the searches.

The discovery came after the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission (QCCC) uncovered over $5 million in gold, silver, and funds obtained by the syndicate.

The QCCC is now looking to confiscate the funds and assets allegedly obtained through illegal means.

However, no charges have been laid at this stage, with investigations continuing.

"The NDIS exists to support Australians with significant and permanent disability to access the services they need – every action we take is about protecting the NDIS for those who rely on it today and for future generations," an NDIA spokesperson said.

"We are strengthening our safeguards every day, including enhanced monitoring and payment controls to prevent, detect, and disrupt criminal behaviour targeting the Scheme."

The findings come just weeks after the Australian government announced it would slash billions in funding to the NDIS, in part to limit rots and exploitation from providers across the country.
