Manslaughter charge over worksite death

An excavator driver charged with manslaughter following a Queensland worksite death in April has been granted bail.

Neil Norris, 24, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday after being charged on Tuesday over the death of a workmate allegedly hit in the head by earth-moving equipment at Springfield Lakes, southwest of Brisbane.

Maintenance fitter Peter Tullett, 29, suffered a fractured skull and died in hospital a day after the April 10 incident.

Norris was allegedly at the controls of the excavator when straps holding the earth mover slipped and caused the accident.

"Mr Norris is absolutely devastated by the awful incident," defence lawyer Emma Aldersea said outside court.

"These are obviously very tragic circumstances for all of those involved."

Norris's matter has been adjourned until September 6.
