A teenage boy has been charged after a man was stabbed in the throat outside his home on the Gold Coast.

The man was allegedly attacked while trying to stop three teenagers from breaking into cars along Monterey Keys and Lake Shore Drives.

Steve Campbell, 45, and his adult son, Lachlan chased and caught a 15-year-old girl they'd seen targeting cars at Helensvale about 4am yesterday.

Mr Campbell's son kept the girl detained until police arrived, before he claims he was set upon by two boys who punched and kicked him.

"We had a scuffle and then I got stabbed," Mr Campbell told 9NEWS.

"It missed all the major arteries so I think someone was looking down on me."

On Wednesday police confirmed a 17-year-old Southport teen had been charged with four counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence over the incident.

He has been ordered to face court on April 19.

The 15-year-old girl is also assisting police in their inquiries.

Mr Campbell said he "feels sorry for them" and doesn't harbour any bad blood.

He was released from hospital on Tuesday after being given the all-clear by doctors.
