Lindsay Ede, 56, died after being punched by Ariik Mayot in Goodna last year.

The first person to be charged under Queensland's "one-punch" law has pleaded guilty to killing a grandfather in Goodna last year.

Ariik Mayot attacked 56-year-old Lindsay Ede as he was walking from his home to his brother's Goodna house, southwest of Brisbane, on June 22, 2015.

Mr Ede was punched from behind, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

Mayot was originally charged with grievous bodily harm but the charge was upgraded to the state's recently introduced unlawful striking causing death offence after Mr Ede died in hospital on July 15.

The offence carries a non-parole period of 15 years or 80 per cent of a sentence behind bars, whichever is less.

Mayot, who was 19 when he attacked Mr Ede, was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on March 6 next year.
