Qld prosecution a warning to pet bashers

The RSPCA hopes people will think twice about taking their anger out on animals after a Brisbane man filmed abusing his puppy lost the pet and was banned from owning another.

Daniel Thomas Johnson, 25, beat his six-month-old puppy Buddy with his hands and flung him at a wall for making a mess in their northside home.

The kelpie cross was taken from him and Johnson was banned from having a pet for a year after he pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Johnson, who was prosecuted after his flatmate filmed the incident, was given 18 months' probation and advised to undergo anger management training.

His flatmate filmed the disturbing footage because it wasn't the first time Johnson had lost his temper with the puppy, the court heard.

Johnson must pay almost $1500 in court costs.

Outside, RSPCA inspector Rebecca Melotte said she was satisfied with the result.

"It's upsetting to see someone take out their anger and frustrations on a defenceless animal," she said.

"We'll continue to pursue these matters and hopefully it will encourage people to think twice about their actions and their behaviour towards animals."

Buddy suffered no permanent injury and will be given a new home.

"He's very friendly dog. He's just young, he's energetic. He needs proper training," Ms Melotte said.

Earlier, Johnson, who has previously served in the defence force, told the court he was sorry and ashamed.

Magistrate Wendy Cull accepted Johnson was genuinely remorseful for his "cruel" and "unwarranted" actions.

"An animal in your care was hurt unjustifiably, unnecessarily and unreasonably," she said.

She did not record a conviction against Johnson.
