Man charged following nine-hour siege at Redcliffe home

A man is facing serious charges after a nine-hour siege involving hostages north of Brisbane.

The 48-year-old faces three charges, including seriously assaulting police and a bomb hoax, after allegedly taking two people and a dog hostage and threatening police with a home-made firearm at a Redcliffe home yesterday morning.

Police were called to a home at Klingner Road in Redcliffe around 10.40am yesterday to reports a man was holding family members hostage.

Upon arrival they were threatened by a man claiming he had a home-made gun.

An exclusion zone was set up around the house and buses diverted, with police advising members of public to "avoid the area".

Police eventually negotiated the release of an elderly man, followed by a second man and a dog, believed to be the armed man’s father and brother, respectively.

A BearCat armoured personnel carrier was then used by the Brisbane’s Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) to batter down a gate to the property.

The man eventually handed himself into police and is expected to face Redcliffe Magistrates Court later today.
