'Enough is enough': Qld mayor slams fires

The mayor of a southeast Queensland city hit by a worrying spate of house fires has told locals: "Enough is enough".

Logan Mayor Pam Parker made the declaration on Thursday morning, 12 hours after a family of nine were left homeless when a blaze destroyed their Logan Cental residence.

While five people at home at the time escaped, their pet dog didn't survive.

The blaze was the city's second major house fire in four days, after a devastating inferno at Beenleigh on Sunday night claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

His mother, Crystal Cartledge, later died in hospital.

Cr Parker said Wednesday's fire was the 51st in the region in 12 months and that tally must be lowered.

She made an impassioned plea to locals to buy photoelectric smoke detectors if they didn't already have them.

"Enough is enough. People are not listening," Cr Parker insisted.

"You must have smoke detectors in your home to keep your family safe."

She said candles, which have reportedly sparked three Logan fires this year, were also a no-go.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Mark Roche said authorities were investigating if there were any common factors contributing to the recent blazes.

He said Logan Command had attended 29 residential structure fires in the last two months.

"People need to be accountable for their actions," he said.

"The community needs to wake up."

He urged people to look out for their neighbours to ensure everyone had a working smoke alarm.

A crime scene has been established as investigators probe the cause of Wednesday night's fire on Jacaranda Avenue.
