Learner charged after Qld police crash

A Gold Coast officer has been taken to hospital with minor leg and back injuries after an 18-year-old learner driver accelerated into an unmarked police vehicle.

Police were patrolling the Elanora area about 11.45am on Tuesday when they noticed a Ford Laser sedan on the road without registration plates.

When they caught up with it a short time later, one of the officers approached the parked car.

The male driver allegedly accelerated and crashed into the rear of another car parked in front of him.

As the officer tried to remove the keys from the man's car, the driver allegedly did a u-turn and accelerated into the unmarked police vehicle, while the senior constable's arm remained stuck in the steering wheel.

The 18-year-old continued to drive off before his keys were removed.

He was taken to hospital with facial injuries, before being charged with multiple offences including the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and evading police.

He will face Southport Magistrates Court on May 10.
