Keep eating bananas, Qld growers urge

North Queensland banana growers are urging consumers not to be put off by the latest detection of Panama disease in the region.

The Australian Banana Growers' Council chairman Stephen Lowe said the disease impacts the banana plant but not the fruit.

"Bananas are certainly safe to eat. Diseased plants cannot survive long enough for bananas to grow," Mr Lowe said.

Mr Lowe said banana growers remain "on edge" about the return of the disease to the area but described Biosecurity Queensland protocols as the world's best.

He said strong on-farm biosecurity protocols have been in place since the disease threatened the banana industry two years ago when detected on a nearby farm.
