A jury has retired to consider its verdict for a man accused of the execution-style killing of a Brisbane rugby league referee.

Tyson John Taylor has pleaded not guilty to murdering Brisbane rugby league referee Tony McGrath at his Woolloongabba home in May 2013, as well as an attempted murder charge after Mr McGrath's house was set alight in October 2012.

The jury in his Supreme Court trial retired at 11am on Monday to determine its verdict, with a key consideration to be whether or not so-called confessions the 41-year-old made to covert police posing as gangsters were genuine or made out of fear or desperation.
