Hung jury in Gold Coast murder trial

A jury has failed to reach a verdict for the second time over the alleged murder of a Gold Coast drug addict.

Shane Hansen and Dean Wills were on trial in Brisbane's Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to the 2001 murder of Darren John Britza, whose body was found buried in 2008.

After deliberating for more than two days, the jury told the court on Monday they could not reach a unanimous verdict and the trial was dismissed.

It is the second time a jury has been unable to reach a verdict in relation to the charges against Wills, who stood trial for the same matter in early 2015.

Wills' lawyer told the court he intended to make a bail application for his client, who had been in custody during the trial.

Hansen's bail was enlarged on the same conditions.

The matter will return to court on March 24.

The pair is accused of bashing Mr Britza at an industrial shed in Southport in March 2001 and driving his tarpaulin-wrapped body away.

Mr Britza's skeletal remains were found seven years later after two fishermen saw a pair of boots sticking out of the dirt underneath Canungra Creek Bridge, about 35km west of Southport.

Pathologist Beng Beng Ong told the court he could not determine what exactly killed Mr Britza but that his upper jaw and nose had collapsed from severe force and he may have been unable to breath before he died.

During the trial, several witnesses who were at the shed testified that two men bashed Mr Britza before wrapping his body up and driving off.

The court heard a white Holden Commodore that belonged to Hansen was found on fire at Clagiraba, about 12km northeast of the Canungra, the day after Mr Britza disappeared.

It also heard Hansen and Wills were seen leaving a party for a couple of hours on the day Mr Britza was attacked.

Hansen's then-girlfriend told the court that he said Wills and him were going to "shut someone up", and a muddied Hansen was seen returning a few hours later carrying a pile of clothes or bedsheets.

Mr Britza's body was also found to be wrapped in a bedsheet.

Hansen's former house mate testified that Hansen later told him that he and Wills had bashed someone and it had "got a bit out of hand".
