Indigenous woman dies in custody at the Brisbane watchhouse

A 49-year-old Indigenous woman has died while in custody in the Brisbane watchhouse overnight.

Shiralee Deanne Tilberoo was found dead in her cell about 6.20 this morning and had been in the watchhouse since Monday.

9News understands she suffered underlying health conditions.

Ms Tilberoo had been arrested for property and drug matters on the morning of Sunday, September 6, police said.

The woman appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday (September 7) and was remanded in custody until October 7.

While the circumstances of the death are to be determined, the investigation will include consideration of any underlying health conditions, police said.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident.
