High Court considers Qld deaf juror case

A Queensland woman who was excluded from jury duty because she is deaf has taken her fight against discrimination to the High Court.

Gaye Lyons, who is profoundly deaf, was summonsed for jury service in Ipswich in 2012 but was told by the deputy registrar she could not serve because she would require two Auslan interpreters and there were no provisions to allow that person inside the jury room.

"Not being able to have an interpreter and serve on a jury is very unfair, so a lot of people are watching this case with great interest to see if this change happens, then it can benefit all people across Australia," CEO of Deaf Australia Kyle Miers said outside a High Court hearing in Brisbane on Monday.
