Health worker banned for sexual assault

A Queensland health worker who sexually assaulted a patient has been banned from the industry.

Christopher Paul Costello was a casual Aboriginal health worker at the Murri Health Group in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, when he fellated a male patient under the guise of drawing fluid in 2013.

Costello was carrying out a routine health check on the patient when he noticed traces of blood in his urine.

When asked why he engaged in oral sex, Costello claimed: "I just need to try and get some fluid out to see where the blood is coming from."

Costello again attempted oral sex on the patient after directing him to the toilet, where the man told him to stop.

"No mate, I came here for a medical check, I'm not gay," the patient said.

"No, no you're not gay. We'll leave it at that, just don't say anything," Costello said.

Costello was sentenced to three months' jail in Brisbane's District Court in 2014 on two counts of sexual assault.

On Wednesday, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal ordered he be prohibited from providing any health service.

Tribunal president James Thomas said Costello posed a "serious and unacceptable" risk towards members of the public as a health worker.

"Irrespective of his error in thinking that his patient was sexually responsive, he showed a willingness to use his workplace and calling as a trolling site," Justice Thomas said.

"This was a fundamental and alarming breach."
