Guardian appointed for woman who accepted marriage proposal over phone

A guardian has been appointed for an intellectually disabled Queensland woman who allegedly accepted an over-the-phone marriage proposal from a man she had only met days earlier online.

The Queensland Civil and Administration Tribunal heard the woman, who is separated from her husband, also agreed to pay for the man's travel and accommodation costs so he could meet her in Brisbane, The Courier Mail reports.

The woman lives in supported accommodation, where she used online dating sites to meet men.

Support workers reportedly became concerned when they discovered the woman was meeting men she had met online.

When a manager learnt she had made arrangements for a man and his brother to travel from Bundaberg to Brisbane to meet her, he requested that she be appointed a guardian.

When staff quizzed her about the incident the woman allegedly said that she had changed her mind. However, workers reportedly overheard conversations where the men continued to ask the woman for money.

She later revealed that she had agreed to marry one of the men during a phone call and would be paying for the engagement and wedding rings.

In June the Queensland Civil and Administration Tribunal found that the woman was at immediate risk of harm and appointed the Public Guardian to make decisions for her for at least three months.

The guardian can decide who the woman can meet with, where she lives and make decisions about her healthcare.
