Gordon calls for broad Qld donations probe

Queensland independent MP Billy Gordon has joined calls for the Labor government to widen an inquiry into political donations.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk wants an inquiry to focus on the Liberal National Party, their donors and the previous government's decisions.

But the LNP says if the probe doesn't cover all political parties it will simply be a witch hunt.

Key crossbencher Mr Gordon, who resigned from the Labor Party earlier this year, also says a broader inquiry would be much more beneficial.

"It's in the public interest," Mr Gordon told AAP.

"It's really important for voters out there to get a clear idea about what kind of political donations parties are getting and who they're receiving them from."

But the two Katter's Australian Party crossbenchers, Rob Katter and Shane Knuth, have not said whether they support widening the probe.

Ms Palaszczuk signed a deal with Speaker Peter Wellington to hold the inquiry in return for his support in the wake of January's inconclusive state poll.

He has declined to comment on whether or not the probe should be more comprehensive.

"I'll be curious to see what happens to see what happens when we come back to parliament," Mr Wellington told AAP.

The government is due to release the terms of reference at the end of this month.
