Glasson heads list for LNP senate spot

Kevin Rudd's local rival Bill Glasson headlines the Liberal National Party's list of nine candidates to fill its vacant Queensland senate spot.

The highest-profile candidate, Mr Glasson clawed back primary support for the LNP to be narrowly defeated by the former prime minister in his south Brisbane seat of Griffith during the 2013 federal election.

The opthalmologist came even closer to defeating Mr Rudd's replacement Terri Butler during the by-election in 2014 prompted by Mr Rudd's resignation from parliament following Labor's defeat.

He'll be pitted against Kerri-Anne Dooley, who has been a serial LNP candidate at state level, scientist Dr Theresa Craig, director Teresa Harding and principal project officer Joanna Lindgren.

Company director Chris Mangan, managing director Nicholas Monsour, lawyer Philip Roberts and barrister Andrew Wallace are also vying for the spot.

The LNP says the candidates will address members of the party's state council at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on May 16.

The successful candidate will be announced that afternoon.

The vacancy follows the resignation of Senator Brett Mason.

Mr Mason had been a Senator since 1999 and resigned in March after losing his parliamentary secretary role in a cabinet reshuffle a few months earlier.

He's since been appointed as Australia's new ambassador to the Netherlands.
