Four clans handed Cape York land title

Four far north Queensland clans have had their native title rights over traditional lands officially recognised.

The Yir Yoront, (also known as Kokomenjen), Koko Bera, Kunjen and Koko Berrin Peoples began their quest for recognition over land near Kowanyama on Cape York about 17 years ago.

The federal court determination, covering about 560 square kilometres, was handed down in Cairns on Friday.

It grants exclusive native title rights over Errk Oykangand National Park, and non-exclusive rights over parts of Galbraith, Vanrook and Inkerman pastoral areas.

Cape York Land Council chairman Richie Ahmat says traditional owners have shown a strong commitment to regaining their ancestral lands.

"We salute those elders who have passed away in the course of this journey, and recognise their contribution to today's magnificent outcome," he said.
