Former academic in court on fraud charges

A former university researcher has appeared in a Brisbane court over allegations she dishonestly applied for grant money.

Former University of Queensland academic Caroline Barwood, 39, faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday on two charges of fraud, two charges of attempted fraud and two charges of obtaining a gain from dishonesty.

The university referred Dr Barwood to the Crime and Corruption Commission over a discredited Parkinson's disease study she co-authored.

Dr Barwood did not enter a plea and was granted bail.

The case was adjourned until December 8.

UQ was forced to ask the European Journal of Neurology to retract the October 2011 research article amid suspicions the study was fabricated.

The university also returned a $20,000 grant it received from a non-government organisation in relation to the research.
