Ekka opens in Brisbane for 140th year

Summer-like weather conditions will descend on Brisbane as the Royal Queensland Show opens its gates for 2017.

More than 400,000 people are expected to visit this year's Ekka, which runs from Friday until August 20 at the showgrounds in Bowen Hills.

Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland chief executive Brendan Christou said visitors could get half-price entry from 6pm every night as part of the show's 140th birthday celebrations.

Mr Christou said there would also be two fireworks displays at 6pm and 8pm.

"We hope the early fireworks create new memories for the next generation, who we hope will become lifelong supporters of the show," he said in a statement on Thursday.

The mercury is set to top 29 degrees on Friday, six above the August average.
