Disabled MP demands apology from ex-MP

A quadriplegic Queensland MP has demanded an apology from his predecessor over an insensitive one-liner ridiculing his disability.

Former Cairns MP Gavin King posted to Facebook on Tuesday about his wheelchair-bound successor Rob Pyne.

"Not really sure the current Member for Cairns knows much about preventative health or is an advocate for the many benefits of running and walking..." Mr King wrote.

Mr Pyne used parliament on Wednesday to demand an apology from Mr King and call on the Liberal National Party to "call out his insensitive statements for what they are".

"Cheap one liners is all Gavin King seems to be capable of," Mr Pyne told parliament.

Facebook users have already condemned the former parliamentarian for his post, with Barry Ryder responding: "You're wondering if a man confined to a wheelchair is a walking advocate? Is there a name for what's wrong with you?"

Pamela Sue Taylor-Grey wrote: "I feel that this was an all-time low for you, using someone's disability against them."

Mr Pyne also listed other examples of where Mr King has attacked the current government through a local blog he has started running since losing to Mr Pyne at the January election.

Mr King falsely claimed Treasurer Curtis Pitt had parked in a disabled park in Cairns, when it was actually his disabled mother's car.

Mr Pyne said Mr King has also posted a false report claiming he was considering quitting the Labor party.

Mr King has previously said that he was benefiting from his controversial posts by generating more traffic for his blog to attract more advertising.

"I'm just a guy with a laptop and some ad revenue to collect," Mr King posted to Facebook.

Mr Pyne became a quadriplegic at 23 after breaking his neck in a diving accident in 1991.
