Deliberations continue for Qld gran case

A jury is set to continue its deliberations in the case of a junk mail delivery man accused of murdering a Queensland grandmother.

Steven Mark John Fennell, 56, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Liselotte Watson on Macleay Island, in Moreton Bay, in November 2012.

A Supreme Court jury in Brisbane retired at on Thursday afternoon to consider its verdict after hearing 13 days of evidence relating to the 85-year-old's violent death.

During the trial, the jury was told that Fennell brutally and callously murdered the elderly widow in a likely attempt to cover-up financial misdeeds.

Jurors were also shown grisly post-mortem pictures, with a pathologist contending she had been repeatedly struck in the head with an object akin to a hammer so severely it bruised her brain.

But Fennell's lawyer, Adrian Donaldson, urged the jury to acquit his client, highlighting a lack of direct evidence connecting him to the death and cautioning them the matter was "not an Agatha Christie" story.

The jury was sent home at 5.30pm on Thursday, but will resume deliberations at 10am on Friday.
