Fresh push for Queensland to observe daylight saving in bid to save state's struggling nightlife

It's one of three Australian states and territories which doesn't observe daylight saving each year.

And the push for Queensland to officially wind clocks forward ahead of summer has once again reached fever pitch.

Venue operators in the Sunshine State are pushing for Queensland to adopt daylight saving in a fresh bid to save the state's struggling nightlife.

Support is mounting for extra hours of sunshine in Queensland after several venue owners called on the government to wind the clocks back and forward in line with Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT.

Queensland, along with Western Australia and the Northern Territory, remain on standard time throughout the year.

Several venue owners have called on Powderfinger star John 'JC' Collins, who is the state's new Night-Life Economy Commissioner, to lobby for the switch.

Business leaders also pushed earlier this year for daylight saving to be introduced by the 2032 Olympics.

Despite the rallying support, Nationals leader and Queenslander David Littleproud said the state's nightlife economy needed much more than an extra hour of daylight.

"We are the most decentralised state, and I don't think daylight saving is the problem for flagging revenues for nightlife, I think it's a cost of living crisis," Littleproud told Today.

"You've got to understand, Cairns is on the same longitude as Cunnamulla, which is about 1000km west of Brisbane. Mount Isa is on the same longitude as Adelaide. And so you start bringing these policies in like daylight saving, you have a significant impact on regional areas.

"I can tell you already in my electorate, which covers 43 per cent of Queensland, the sun already sets an hour later in the west of the electorate than it does in the east."

Littleproud said the change would make it "very hard" for Queensland parents with young children.

He claimed new Premier David Crisafulli "won't go near it" and the state government is unlikely to budge on the subject.

Queensland had a referendum in 1992 on daylight saving and 54.5 per cent voted against the bid for more evening sunlight.

The discussion about extra summer sunshine in the state rears its head every year when the clocks wind forward around the country.
