Cyclone-hit Qld warned of mozzie influx

Residents in cyclone-ravaged north Queensland are being warned about an impending mosquito invasion, with fears the blood-sucking insects could spread disease.

The Whitsunday Regional Council says the heavy rains and pools of still water following Cyclone Debbie provide the perfect breeding ground for "an influx" of mozzies in coming weeks.

The insects can carry diseases such as Dengue Fever, Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus.

Cyclone Debbie tore through north Queensland in late last month, leaving a damage bill expected to be in the billions.

Tens of thousands of homes were without power for days and Daydream Island operators expect the resort island to remain closed until mid-2018 after bringing forward a planned refurbishment.

TIPS TO AVOIDING MOSQUITOES:

* Wear long sleeves, trousers, hats and use insect repellent

* Tip out containers filled with water

* Clean pets' water bowls every four days

* Keep gutters and drains clean

* Fit insect screens to doors and windows
