Couple hit by garbage truck on Gold Coast

A middle-aged couple are seriously injured after being hit by a garbage truck while crossing a busy Gold Coast road.

They were struck by the council truck as it turned a corner onto the Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh Heads around 8.30am on Tuesday.

The woman, 43, has serious head injuries while the 49-year-old man's leg was broken.

They have been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

The southbound lane of the highway near Goodwin Terrace is closed, with forensic crash officers investigating.

Gold Coast City Council acting CEO Joe McCabe said the council is co-operating with police.
